Welte Restored – The Welte Philharmonic Organ at Salomons
This CD was issued by the Royal Academy of Music and features the unique Welte Philharmonic Organ, which can be played manually, like a normal organ, by means of Welte Philharmonic rolls, to give an accurate reproduction of an organist, or by Style 10 Concert Orchestrion rolls. The CD features performances by students at the Royal Academy of Music, together with the March from Tannhäuser; Danse Macabre (played by Edwin Lemare); Liberty Bell; March Lorraine; Santiago; The Blue Danube; Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffman (played by Edwin Lemare); in total 15 tracks.
This organ was restored by Mander Organs Ltd. and AC Pilmer Automatic Music Ltd.

Welte Restored
“The first professionally produced recording of the restored Welte organ at Salomons has been released. Nearly 80 minutes of music from this instrument in all its glory do full justice to the instrument. It is a fitting tribute to the original builders, those involved in all stages of the restoration, the roll artistes, the live performers and the orchestrion arrangers. The repertoire, whether it be from orchestrion, philharmonic roll or live performance, all sits harmoniously together on this disc. It is not your normal average mechanical organ recording (the type that feature Abba alongside Auber for reasons best unknown) nor is it your average classical academic organ recording (pieces avoided even for funerals). The Welte here plays music it was designed to play; music from and popular in the latter part of the 19th century and early 20th. Most importantly the mechanically rendered selections are all beautifully paced. There is none of the oft-encountered tendency over-enthusiasts have for music run through as fast as possible to demonstrate the spool box cog at its best. Musically considered tempi allow the finesse of the orchestrion roll orchestrations to show through. It is impossible to distinguish live performances from the Philharmonic roll recording system and everything meshes together perfectly.
“Equally deserving of praise is the finely produced 32-page accompanying booklet about the instrument, history, restoration, music and organists. There are photographs, specifications and more to read and explore. If only all recordings of this genre were executed with such polished élan. We recommend this recording to absolutely everyone.”
